The Food and Nutrition Department of Capistrano Unified School District is a team of food service professionals working in conjunction with parents, students, and educators to provide a healthy school nutrition environment. Food and Nutrition Services recognizes that wellness and proper nutrition are related to students’ physical well being, growth, development and readiness to learn. All foods available in the district schools during the school day are offered to students with consideration for promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity.
We strive to provide a variety of healthy choices that appeal to students. All meals served to students are analyzed to meet or exceed requirements of the United States Department of Agriculture and the School Meal Initiative, as well as newly passed State Senate Bills. Our menu items feature whole grains, and are low fat, low sugar, and low sodium.
Updated this year is our Food and Nutrition website www.capousd.org/campus where parents and students can find menus, forms, internet deposit and “Health-e Living” tools with nutritional facts and information. Parents can prepay for meals and/or healthy a la carte items by setting up a prepaid account. This can be done by filling out a form available at your school or on our website where you can pay by cash, check, or charge or internet deposit. By using internet deposit you can monitor your child’s spending, set spending limits, and monitor their lunch balance.
Food safety is a priority. Our employees are highly trained and certified in safe food handling procedures. Our facilities are regularly inspected by the Orange County Health Department.
Capistrano Unified School District has adopted a Wellness Policy (BP-5030). We encourage parents and teachers to provide healthy food choices for class parties, celebrations, classroom incentives, and lunches brought from home. Working together we can make our schools a place where a student’s health is a priority and the benefits have a positive effect on their academic success and overall wellness.
