6 through 8
Aliso Viejo Middle School serves approximately
1,000 students in grades 6 through 8.
Our beautiful school is located on a 24.2-acre
site in the City of Aliso Viejo, across
from the Aliso Viejo Ranch. Our school
was recognized as a California Distinguished
School in 1996 and a National Blue Ribbon
School in 2000.
Our school
facility includes 41 classrooms, with small-group instruction rooms
and teacher workrooms in three buildings. There are six science
labs, a drama class, an art room, a home arts room, and two computer
labs.
All of our
classrooms have secure access to the Internet. Additionally, classrooms
are equipped with a Dynacom fiber optics delivery system, which
networks the classrooms to our media center. Each classroom has
a teaching station that includes a Sony 27” monitor, Macintosh
computer, Stylewriter printer and Dynacom control panel. Our library
has the latest technology, including Macintosh computers with CD-ROM
capabilities.
The focus of
our school program is an interdisciplinary team approach. Students
are assigned to a team of two teachers in grade 6, moving to four-teacher
teams in grades 7 and 8. Exciting classroom lessons incorporate
educational television programming with access to worldwide satellite
television, laserdiscs, videotapes and internal video communication.
The technology curriculum is designed to promote collaborative problem-solving
skills and utilize cutting-edge programs.
Sixth-grade
students experience four different exploratory courses throughout
the year: drama/speech, art, computer skills and health. They also
take physical education and may take music as an elective. Seventh-grade
students experience four exploratory courses unless they are involved
in a year-long music program. Eighth grade students select from
a variety of semester or year-long electives.
Our staff has
developed many advisement and recognition programs, including Peer
Assistance Leadership (PAL), Student Assistance Program (SAP), GOTCHA
and Gold Coin incentives programs, and Student of the Month and
awards assemblies.
Our administrators
and staff are committed to high academic standards for all students.
This commitment is clearly evidenced in the outstanding performance
of our students on two standardized tests: The school district’s
CORE level tests and the state-mandated STAR tests. Additionally,
four of our staff members have been named as an Orange County Teacher
of the Year.
We maintain
high expectations for student appearance and behavior. Our PTSA
supports these standards and is involved in promoting programs in
cooperation with the School Site Council and parent advisory groups
for accelerated students.
