BUILDING THE FUTURE TOGETHER

Grades: 6 through 8

Don Juan Avila Middle School opened in September 2000. The school is named after Don Juan Avila who was born in Los Angeles in 1821 and was one of the first private landowners in what is now Orange County. Avila was a prominent figure at Mission San Juan Capistrano and a pioneer in education in the Capistrano Valley area. Due to his political adeptness, he succeeded in helping to obtain donated land for the first permanent school site in the area and was Grantee of Rancho Niguel in the 1850s and 1860s. Avila served on the first Board of Education in San JuanCapistrano. Our school is located in the northern part of the historic Don Juan Avila Rancho called “El Niguel”.

Our facility houses both an elementary and middle school campus. Our middle school enrollment for the 2002-2003 school year is projected at approximately 1,145 students. Our staff is committed to making the transition from elementary to middle school and from middle school to high school very smooth for our students.

Our administration and staff set high academic standards for all students. Teachers work in grade level teams, planning a program that integrates student learning and helps students make connections to their world.

We recognize that the middle school years are a time of change and transition for our students. We offer many activities and opportunities for students to develop their interests and talents in music, art, drama, writing, sports, community activities, student government, foreign language and technology. Students also have access to programs that develop school and community spirit. These programs include Associated Student Body (ASB), Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL), after-school tutorial and support programs, and other extracurricular activities.

Our school is interactive with parents in our community. The school’s technological infrastructure allows us to provide Internet access to our classrooms. Teachers have even created their own classroom websites where school assignments can be accessed. School information and calendars are routinely included on our school's web page.

Students use computers as tools to enhance and extend their learning. They also have the opportunity to learn advanced computer skills in elective courses.

Parents are very active in our school. Serving on the School Site Council, PTA Board, or volunteering in the classrooms, health office and copy center, are just a few of the ways parents are involved at Don Juan Avila School. Parents and the community are always welcome at our school, and we hope to see you often.
